Sharing Brings Happiness

Subject: English | Class: 3 | Series: Leeds (SNC 2020)

Hello, students! Welcome to Unit 3 of your Leeds English textbook. Today our lesson is called Sharing Brings Happiness, and we are going to learn a very important lesson about helping others.

Let me tell you the story of Asif. Asif was a very rich and clever boy. He had everything a boy could ever wish for. Because he had so much, he was only interested in rare and curious objects.

One day, Asif saw a very big and old mirror, and he convinced his parents to buy it from a mysterious old man. When the mirror arrived home, Asif went to see his reflection in it. But something strange happened. His face looked very sad in the mirror! He tried smiling and making funny faces, but his reflection remained sad.

Asif tried everything to make the mirror show a happy face. He went off and bought sweets. He came home as happy as can be, but the mirror still showed a sad face. He bought all kinds of toys and old junk, but he forever looked sad in that mirror.

Fed up, Asif placed the mirror off in a corner and said, "What a terrible mirror! It does not work properly!"

That same afternoon, Asif went out to the park. There he saw a little boy who was crying very badly. The boy looked so lonely and sad that Asif went over to help him. The little boy told Asif that he had lost his parents and was very hungry.

Asif decided to help. He spent his money on buying the boy food to eat, which cheered him up. Then the two boys set off together to search for the boy's parents. After much walking, they finally found his parents, who were very worried.

Asif said goodbye and walked home. He had no toys, no money, and nothing to play with. But when he went to his room, he noticed a shining light coming from the corner where he had left the mirror!

He went over to the mirror and saw that it was showing happiness on his face! The light was coming from his own body. And so Asif understood the mystery of the mirror. It was the only mirror that could faithfully reflect the true joy of its owner.

He realized it was true: he felt very happy because he had helped that little boy. And from that day on, each morning when he looked in the mirror and failed to see a special shine, he already knew what he had to do to bring it back — help someone!

What a wonderful lesson! The moral of this story is that true happiness comes from sharing and helping others, not from buying things for ourselves.

Now let us learn some vocabulary from this unit.

"Treated" means behaved in a particular way. For example, "She treated everyone with kindness."

"Explanation" means clarification. "The teacher gave a clear explanation."

"Decided" means made a determination. "He decided to help the boy."

Next, let us learn about long and short vowel sounds. Every vowel — A, E, I, O, U — can make two sounds: a long sound and a short sound.

The long vowel sound is when the vowel says its own name. For example, in "baby," the A says its name "ay." In "seat," the E says "ee." In "mind," the I says "eye." In "rope," the O says "oh."

The short vowel sound is a quick, shorter sound. For example, in "cat," the A says "ah." In "den," the E says "eh." In "wit," the I says "ih." In "yogurt," the O sound is short.

Now let us learn about the gender of nouns. Nouns can be masculine, feminine, or neuter.

A masculine noun is a noun that refers to a male. Examples are: king, brother, father, lion, peacock, bull.

A feminine noun is a noun that refers to a female. Examples are: queen, sister, mother, lioness, peahen, cow.

A neuter gender noun is a noun that refers to a lifeless thing. These have no male or female form. Examples are: bus, computer, jug, lamp.

Here are some important masculine-feminine pairs to remember: king and queen, brother and sister, father and mother, lion and lioness, peacock and peahen, bull and cow, drake and duck, horse and mare, actor and actress.

Finally, let us learn about pronouns. A pronoun is a word that we use in place of a noun so we do not have to repeat the noun again and again.

For example, instead of saying "Ali is a good boy. Ali goes to school daily," we say "Ali is a good boy. He goes to school daily."

Common pronouns are: I, he, she, it, we, they, you, them.

We use "he" for a boy or man. We use "she" for a girl or woman. We use "it" for a thing or animal. We use "they" for more than one person. We use "we" when we include ourselves.

Let us recap what we learned today. We read the story of Asif and the magic mirror and learned that sharing and helping others brings true happiness. We learned vocabulary words: treated, explanation, and decided. We learned about long and short vowel sounds. We learned about three types of noun gender: masculine, feminine, and neuter. And we learned about pronouns.

Remember, always share with others and help those in need. That is where true happiness comes from!

Thank you for watching. See you in the next lesson!
