Health is Wealth
Subject: English | Class: 3 | Series: Leeds (SNC 2020)
Hello, students! Welcome to Unit 1 of your Leeds English textbook. Today we are going to learn about a very important topic: Health is Wealth.
Do you know that every child needs energy? Energy to learn, to play games, to stay healthy. But where does this energy come from? It comes from the food we eat! So it is very important to eat good, healthy food.
There are five food groups that our body needs.
The first group is fruit and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables give us nutrients that protect us from diseases. We should try to eat fruit and vegetables at every meal. This includes fresh fruit like apples, bananas, and oranges, and vegetables like carrots, spinach, and peas.
The second group is grain foods. Grain foods include bread, pasta, noodles, rice, oats, and barley. These foods give children the energy they need to grow, develop, and learn.
The third group is dairy foods. Key dairy foods are milk, cheese, and yogurt. These are good sources of protein and calcium. Calcium makes our bones and teeth strong.
The fourth group is protein. Protein-rich foods include lean meat, fish, chicken, eggs, beans, lentils, chickpeas, and nuts. These foods are important for growth and muscle development.
And do not forget water! Water is the healthiest drink for children. It is also the cheapest. Drinking milk and fruit juices is also good.
Now, there are some foods that we should avoid. These are called junk food. Junk food includes fast food, takeaway food, hot chips, and burgers. These foods are not healthy and must be avoided. Remember: Eat Healthy and Stay Healthy!
Now let us learn some important vocabulary from this unit.
"Favourite" means best loved. For example, "Mangoes are my favourite fruit."
"Participate" means to take part in something. "We should participate in sports."
"Nutrients" are substances necessary for health. "Fruits provide important nutrients."
"Snacks" means a light meal. "Fruit is a healthy snack."
"Include" means to add. "Include vegetables in every meal."
"Junk food" means processed food. "We should avoid junk food."
Next, let us talk about silent letters. In English, some words have letters that we do not say when we speak. These are called silent letters.
For example, in the word "knee," the letter K is silent. We say "nee," not "k-nee."
In the word "comb," the letter B is silent. We say "cohm," not "comb."
In the word "honest," the letter H is silent. We say "onest."
Some more words with silent letters are: castle, knife, know, lamb, listen, debt, and wrist. Can you find the silent letter in each word?
Finally, let us learn about the pronunciation of -ed. When we add -ed to a verb to make it past tense, it can sound three different ways.
First, it can sound like /t/. This happens after voiceless sounds like P, F, K, S. For example: walked, washed, helped.
Second, it can sound like /d/. This happens after voiced sounds like B, G, L, M, N. For example: called, cleaned, played.
Third, it can sound like /id/. This happens after the sounds T or D. For example: wanted, started, added.
Let us recap what we learned today. We learned about the five food groups: fruit and vegetables, grains, dairy, protein, and the importance of water. We learned six vocabulary words: favourite, participate, nutrients, snacks, include, and junk food. We learned about silent letters in words like knee, comb, and castle. And we learned that -ed can be pronounced as /t/, /d/, or /id/.
Remember, health is wealth! Eat a balanced diet from all five food groups, drink plenty of water, and stay away from junk food.
Thank you for watching. See you in the next lesson!
