Profession and Job

Subject: English | Class: 2 | Series: Leeds (SNC 2020)

Hello, children! Welcome to today's lesson. Today we are going to learn a beautiful poem about different professions and jobs. This poem was written by T. S. Eliot.

Let us read the poem together.

The writer writes and the poet sings, The painter paints some beautiful things. The doctor heals and the lawyer appeals, The pilot flies aeroplanes over the hills.

Teachers teach well, the drivers drive, The actor makes some characters alive. The player plays and the dancers dance, The merchant sells goods with good chance.

All are busy throughout the days, Or they wander through pleasant ways. Whatever they do, whatever befall, The farmer must have fed them all.

What a wonderful poem! It tells us about many different professions. Let us talk about each one.

A writer writes books and stories. A poet sings poems and creates beautiful verses. A painter paints pictures and beautiful things. A doctor heals sick people and examines our health. A lawyer appeals and argues cases in court. A pilot flies aeroplanes over the hills. Teachers teach students well in schools. Drivers drive cars, buses, and other vehicles. An actor makes characters come alive in plays and movies. A player plays sports and games. Dancers perform beautiful dances. A merchant buys and sells goods.

And at the end of the poem, we learn something very important: whatever everyone does, the farmer must have fed them all. This means the farmer is very important because the farmer grows the food that we all eat.

Now let us learn some vocabulary. The word "paint" means to cover a surface or object with paint. The word "merchant" means a person who buys and sells goods. The word "pleasant" means attractive or nice.

In this unit, we also learned about three types of words. Naming words are the names of persons, animals, places, and things. For example, sparrow, fort, mountain, and needle are all naming words. Action words describe what someone does. For example, play, read, eat, and sing are action words. Describing words tell us more about a noun. For example, red tomato, bright moon, dry fruits, and clever boy all contain describing words.

We also learned about objective personal pronouns. These are pronouns used as the object in a sentence. They are: me, you, him, her, it, us, and them. For example, "I sent him a gift" — "him" is the objective pronoun. "The teacher teaches me" — "me" is the objective pronoun.

Finally, we learned about capitalisation and punctuation marks. Always begin a sentence with a capital letter. Use a full stop at the end of a complete sentence. Use a comma to separate items in a list. Use a question mark at the end of a question. And use an exclamation mark to express strong feelings or surprise.

Let us quickly review. We read the poem about professions by T. S. Eliot. We learned about many jobs — from writer and doctor to farmer. We learned that the farmer feeds everyone. We studied naming words, action words, and describing words. We practised objective pronouns: me, him, her, us, them. And we learned the rules for capitalisation and punctuation marks.

Remember, children — every profession is important. We should respect all workers and be thankful to farmers who grow our food.

Thank you for watching, and see you in the next lesson!
