Football (Poem)

Revision Objectives
- Recite the poem "Football" from memory.
- Recall vocabulary meanings (thrill, chill, pounding, popping, offense).
- Identify consonant clusters (scr, str, spr) in words.
- Spell key words correctly.
- Use is, am, are correctly in sentences.
- Use possessive pronouns (my, your, his, her, our, their) in sentences.
- Name common sports items.
Activity 1: Poem Recitation Competition (5 minutes)
Focus: Reading and memorisation
- Divide the class into two groups.
- Group A recites the first four lines, Group B recites the next four lines.
- Then swap.
- Individual volunteers recite the full poem.
- Award points for rhythm, energy, and pronunciation.
Activity 2: Vocabulary Quick Fire (5 minutes)
Focus: Word meanings
Teacher says a meaning. Students call out the word.
- Excitement → thrill
- Coldness → chill
- Heavy → pounding
- Fluffy → popping
- Attack → offense
Then reverse: Teacher says the word, students give the meaning.
Activity 3: Cluster Sentence Hunt (10 minutes)
Focus: Consonant clusters (scr, str, spr)
- Write five sentences on the board (without underlining the cluster words).
- Students read each sentence and find the word with a consonant cluster.
- Sentences:
- The stream flows through the valley.
- I saw a movie on the big screen.
- Flowers bloom in spring.
- She scratched her knee.
- He is a strong boy.
Activity 4: Spelling Dictation (5 minutes)
Focus: Correct spelling
Teacher dictates words. Students write them in notebooks.
Words: popping, pounding, chill, quite, defense, thrill, offense, spring
Check answers together.
Activity 5: is/am/are Sorting (10 minutes)
Focus: Grammar
- Write subject words on one set of cards: I, He, She, It, We, They, You, Ali, The cat, The boys.
- Write is, am, are on three separate cards.
- Students pick a subject card and match it with the correct verb card.
- Then make a sentence using that combination.
Examples:
- I + am → "I am happy."
- She + is → "She is my sister."
- They + are → "They are playing."
Activity 6: Possessive Pronoun Fill-In (5 minutes)
Focus: Words showing possession
Teacher reads sentences with a blank. Students call out the correct possessive pronoun.
- This is ___ bag. (my)
- Ali loves ___ mother. (his)
- Sara plays with ___ doll. (her)
- We finished ___ homework. (our)
- They washed ___ car. (their)
- You must bring ___ books. (your)
Activity 7: Sports Items Quiz (5 minutes)
Focus: Naming sports items
Teacher describes a sports item. Students name it.
- You wear it on your head to protect yourself. → helmet
- Three sticks standing in the ground for cricket. → stumps/wickets
- You kick this round ball in football. → football
- You wear these on your legs in cricket. → pads
- You wear these on your feet to run. → sports shoes/trainers
Activity 8: Permission Dialogue Practice (5 minutes)
Focus: Oral communication
Students pair up and practise seeking permission for different items:
- "Can I use your ruler?" → "Yes, but please use it with care."
- "May I borrow your eraser?" → "Sure. Here you go." → "Thank you." → "You are welcome."
