Video Script — Unit 5
The Brave Boys
Subject: English | Class: 2 | Series: Leeds (SNC 2020)
Hello, children! Welcome to today's lesson. Today we are going to learn a story called "The Brave Boys."
This story is about some boys who showed great bravery. Let us find out what happened.
One day, some boys were playing cricket in a school ground. All of a sudden, they heard a hue and cry nearby. The boys stopped playing cricket and went to the spot where smoke was coming out of a house.
They rushed to the house and found it on fire. There was nobody else near the fire. Only a few women were running to and fro, crying bitterly. The boys thought there might be somebody inside the house who could not come outside. There were flames on all sides. It was a great danger.
The boys were very brave. One of them was really heroic. He ran into the burning house and found an old woman there. She was too weak to walk. The boy took her on his shoulders and came out running with her. Meanwhile, the other boys were trying to extinguish the fire by throwing water.
People from nearby houses gathered there. They were amazed to see the boys. They called them brave boys. The next day, the principal of the school heard the story. He congratulated the boys on their heroic feat. This was really a worthy act of bravery.
Now let us learn some important vocabulary from this story.
The word "danger" means a troublesome situation. The fire was a dangerous situation.
The word "heroic" means bold. The boy who went into the burning house was heroic.
The word "really" means in fact. It was really a worthy act of bravery.
In this unit, we also learned about contractions. A contraction is a shorter way of saying something. Instead of saying "I am at school," we can say "I'm at school." Instead of "He is my friend," we say "He's my friend." And instead of "They are singing," we say "They're singing." These are called contractions of the verb "be."
We also practised pronouns again. Remember, a pronoun is a word used in place of a noun. The pronouns are He, She, It, I, We, They, and You. For example: "He speaks the truth." "They live in Karachi." "We are Muslims."
Now let us learn about ordinal numbers. An ordinal number tells the position of something. First means position number one. Second means position number two. Third means number three. Then we have fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth. These are very useful when you want to say what position something is in — like "I came first in the race" or "She is the third student in the line."
Let us quickly review what we learned today. We read the story of "The Brave Boys" — boys who stopped playing cricket to help put out a fire and rescue an old woman. We learned that bravery means being bold enough to face frightening things. We learned the vocabulary words danger, heroic, and really. We practised contractions like I'm, He's, and They're. We reviewed pronouns. And we learned ordinal numbers from first to tenth.
Remember, children — bravery is an admirable quality. Always try to help others when they are in trouble.
Thank you for watching, and see you in the next lesson!
