Family Chores

Subject: English | Class: 1 | Series: Leeds (SNC 2020)

Hello children! Welcome to today's lesson. We are going to learn about family chores.

Let me tell you about a girl named Hania. Hania lives with her family in a big house. She has two sisters and one brother. Hania's family shares many chores with each other.

Hania and her brother take the garbage out. They also wash their father's motorcycle twice a week. Every Friday, Hania weeds the garden and her brother waters the plants. Hania also makes her bed in the morning.

Her mother sweeps the kitchen and washes the dishes daily. Her father mops the drawing room floor and cuts the grass with a lawnmower. Her brother, Hashir, vacuums the rugs in the living room and empties the trash.

After they finish all the chores, the whole family has dinner together. They watch a cartoon or drama on TV. They reward themselves with a big piece of chocolate cake! Then they are so tired that they go straight to sleep.

Do you help your parents at home? What chores do you do? Doing chores is important because it teaches you to be responsible and to take care of yourself and your family.

Now let us learn about words with the same beginning sound. Listen: boy, bag, bus, box, bell. What do you notice? They all start with the same sound -- /b/! When words start with the same sound, they have the same beginning sound.

Now listen: cat, rat, mat, bat, fat. What do you notice? They all end with the same sound -- /t/! When words end with the same sound, they have the same ending sound.

Let us also learn about possessive pronouns. A possessive pronoun shows who owns something. If I have a book, I say "It is mine." If you have a book, I say "It is yours." If a boy has a book, I say "It is his." If a girl has a book, I say "It is hers." If we all have books, I say "They are ours."

One more important skill: alphabetical order. To put words in alphabetical order, we look at the first letter. A comes before B. B comes before C. So "apple" comes before "ball" and "ball" comes before "cat." For example: sun, apple, cat, zoo, umbrella. In alphabetical order: apple, cat, sun, umbrella, zoo.

Let us review what we learned today. We read about Hania's family and how they share chores at home. We learned about words with the same beginning and ending sounds. We learned possessive pronouns like mine, yours, his, hers, and ours. And we practised putting words in alphabetical order.

Great work, everyone! See you next time!
